What changed for Claude Code since July
Three model-level changes hit Claude Code specifically. Fable 5.1 arrived with a High default effort in Claude Code against Medium on Claude.ai and Cowork, which means the same task can cost and reason differently depending on the surface. Opus 5 became the strongest model on Pro and the default on Max, and its fast mode — about 2.5x speed at 2x base price — draws on Claude Code usage credits. And the Fable 5.1 cache-read cut lands hardest here, because long coding sessions are exactly the large-stable-prefix profile that benefits.
A fourth change is architectural rather than commercial. Per-message effort, shipped as an additive beta with Fable 5.1, lets a session mix cheap and expensive turns. The old pattern of routing an entire session to one model to control cost is now only one option.
- Check which model your Claude Code sessions actually use before comparing cost against chat.
- Treat fast mode as a deliberate choice; it doubles base price for latency.
- Expect long sessions with a stable cached prefix to be the best case for Fable 5.1 economics.
- Test forced tool use in any Claude Code automation before moving it to Fable 5.1.
Analysis
The product shape
Claude Code is an agentic development environment, not a chat window with a shell prompt. The official docs describe a tool that lives in the terminal, integrates with IDE workflows, and connects to external context. Adoption therefore touches repository conventions, credential boundaries, code-review habits, and local machine assumptions.
Subscription access matters too. Claude Code is available through Pro and Max paths as well as platform billing. That makes it easy for an individual developer to start and hard for an organization to keep a consistent policy unless project-level instructions and settings are explicit.
Analysis
MCP and skills are the leverage points
MCP turns Claude Code from a repository assistant into a workflow assistant. Connected to issue trackers, docs, databases, browser sessions, or internal tools, the model operates with context that is not in the checkout. That is valuable, and it moves the security boundary from "what is in my repo?" to "what can this configured environment read and call?"
Agent Skills are the convention layer on top. Where MCP grants access, a skill encodes how the team wants a recurring job done. Both belong in version control and both belong in review, for the same reason: they change what an agent does on a teammate’s machine.
- Inventory installed MCP servers, auth scopes, and settings precedence per project.
- Keep repo-local instructions for build, test, style, and ownership boundaries.
- Version skills alongside code and review them like code.
- Route generated changes through the same tests and review gates as human changes.
- Log model ID, effort level, and Claude Code version in debugging notes when behavior matters.

Browser automation now needs a policy
Claude in Chrome is generally available on every paid Claude plan, with autonomous browser actions gated by a safety classifier and, for Enterprise, admin domain allowlists. For engineering teams this is adjacent to Claude Code rather than part of it, but it lands in the same governance conversation: an agent that can act in a logged-in browser is a different risk profile from an agent that can edit files.
Decide explicitly whether browser automation is in scope for your team, and if so, whether the Enterprise allowlist is configured. The default for a paid plan is availability, not restriction.
FAQ
Fast answers
Which model should I use in Claude Code in September 2026?
Start with Opus 5, which is the default on Max and the strongest model on Pro. Move to Fable 5.1 for long-horizon agentic work, where its 2.5% cache-read rate can offset the higher base price on sessions with a large stable cached prefix.
Why does Fable 5.1 behave differently in Claude Code than in chat?
Default thinking effort differs by surface. Fable 5.1 defaults to High effort in Claude Code and Medium on Claude.ai and Cowork.
What is Opus 5 fast mode?
Anthropic describes fast mode as roughly 2.5x speed at 2x base price, available on the platform and through Claude Code usage credits.
